Story

The sky was still dark as Tess head toward the open roads. It was going to be a long drive from British Columbia to the Maritimes.  This was her first long road trip and she was glad to have Turducken beside her.  She never realized how much she could love this mutt she found on the side of the road a year ago.  She looked over at him curled up in the front passenger side.

When she arrived in British Columbia a year ago she was alone missed her family.  She was not able to make it home for the Thanksgiving Day Classic her family held each year.  But that year she was thankful to find this stranded little matted ball of fur.  She knew he was abused when she saw him so scrawny. His white fur had tuffs of mauve tinge to them like someone was dyeing him purple before he escaped.

She remembered how she want to find the person or people that had done this to the little one but with Vancouver’s population of close to 2.5 million she felt helpless in find the culprits.  She believed she could give him a good temporary home until she could find a forever family.

She looked over to Turducken.  “Who would have thought, I would be your forever family and you would be my forever fur baby”.

He looked up at her and it almost looked like he smiled.  When she came to a stop sign she reached down to the bag of homemade treats for him, actually they were road treats for both of them.  “So do you want a dehydrated apple or pumpkin?” she asked the little ball of white fuzz, “I think I am going to have the apple.”  Turducken’s tail wagged in approval. Giving him his treat she made a turn and headed towards the USA and Canada border. It was suppose to be a shorter route to travel.

When she arrived at the USA Custom office she declared all she had and showed her papers for Turducken.  “We are just passing through on our way to my parent home.” She told the officer.

“Where is that miss?”

“1957 Wyvern Road, St John, New Brunswick. Just taking the quicker route through your beautiful country.  I will be cutting back over into Canada tomorrow at the Noyes Emerson crossing.   Here are my reservations for a motel I will be spending the night at.”

“Well miss it looks like you have everything in order, but please hold on a second.” He said as he shifted on his heels and head back to an office.

Tess was becoming nervous wondering what the problem might be.  She watched him come out of the office with something in his hand.

As he approached, Turducken took notice and started to wag his tail.  The officer bent down and open his hand inside was a large pig ear dog treat.

“Here something for this little cutie as you travels to keep him busy.  You are free to go.  Have a safe trip.” He said with a big smile as he scratched Turducken’s head.

“Thank you, have a beautiful day too.” She replied and pulled out of the customs area and head toward the highway.

“Well boy it is just you and me for a bit.” She looked over and saw he was enjoying the new found treat.

The sun was rising as the sky brightened. She had a feeling this was going to be a good day to travel.
