Story

Leo was boxing up the first fruits of his squash harvest for the Saint Nicholas food bank.  His mother taught him that it was their duty to share the goodness of the earth as it makes the bounty of the harvest sweeter.   He knew  it was a hard year for so many during the troubling times that they were living in. Yet he was blessed with a bountiful harvest more than he needed and knew in his heart that this blessing was meant to bless others.

As he was loading the last box on to his truck, he looked over to his mother’s favorite flower garden and memories of her planting narcissus, lady slippers and tulips filled his thoughts.  He glanced over to the small birch tree at edge of the garden and noticed something growing on the trunk.  Walking toward the tree he said to himself, “I better get rid of that poison ivy before it takes over the garden.”  Suddenly he realized it wasn’t what he thought growing up the tree. With laughter he said out loud. “It’s mistletoe! Now how did you get here?  Are you a remnant of mom’s love for her garden?  She always wanted to try growing mistletoe.”  He never thought she got a chance to plant it but it would be the great conjunction she always wanted.  Looking at his watch, he realized he had 29 minutes to get to the food bank.

Walking back to the truck he noticed a young cardinal getting ready to take its first flight of the day. Smiling he knew his mother was watching him and he should have known because today was a special day. The first day of the Festival of Lights was his mother’s favorite time of the year.

Looking around the landscape he noticed that the world became a little brighter.  “Thank you mom, for reminding me that through nature we are always connected.”
