Virtual Tour – Ruins of Pompeii Part 1

Today’s virtual tour takes us to one of the most fascinating historical sites in the world today, Pompeii. Pompeii is one of the best known ancient cities on Europe. Located near current-day Naples, Italy, Pompeii was destroyed when Mount Vesuvius erupted in 79AD. The eruption killed between 1500 and 2000 of the city’s 15,000 residents. The entire city was buried under 6 metres of ash and rock. Excavation of the city began sporadically in the 1800s. Pompeii has been a tourist attraction for more than 250 years. It was even considered to be part of the “Grand Tour” that young English aristocrats would take on the continent before settling down. It is now a UNESCO World Heritage Site and welcomes two and a half million people annually. This video will take us from the main entrance to the Marine Gate, the Forum, and the Temple of Genius Augusti and the original marketplace, call the Macellum.

Come back next week for Part 2, where we will visit the Basillica, one of the cities brothels, and the Temple of Jupiter.
