Let’s Help Keep Each Other Healthy

Do not let fear take hold of you with the new Coronavirus (COVID-19) spreading and now considered a pandemic. Our best defence of this virus is a good offence with being informed and following good Hygienic practices.  Social Media blurs lines of facts and fiction.  Your best information is from the Chatham-Kent Public Health website Page (click here for up to date info).

According to the Chatham-Kent Public Health we are still low risk. NO Confirm cases in our area (as of March 12th).

That does not mean we should not be diligent to prevent the spread of the COVID-19 or any respiratory illnesses CKPH asks us to do our part by doing the following:

  • Wash your hands often with soap and water for at least 20 seconds.
  • If you are unable to access soap and water, use 70% alcohol-based hand sanitizer.
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth with unwashed hands.
  • Avoid close contact with people who are sick.
  • Cough or sneeze into a disposable tissue or into your elbow, not into your hand.
  • Now and in any cold and flu season, stay home if you are sick to avoid spreading illness to others.
  • Clean and disinfect frequently touched objects and surface

If you feel unwell or feel like you are coming down with something please consider staying home instead of coming into the Centre, just to be on the safe side even if it not this virus it would be a shame if it was shared it with others.

For travellers CKPH recommendations are as follows:

Travellers who have returned from an affected area (Hubei province, including Wuhan City, Iran, or Italy) should:

  • Contact CK Public Health’s COVID-19 intake line within 24 hours of arriving in Canada
  • Stay at home and avoid close contact with others, including those in their home,  for a total of 14 days from the date they left Hubei province or Iran
  • Contact CK Public Health’s COVID-19 intake line at 519.355.1071 x 1900 or call their primary care provider’s office if they experience symptoms

Travellers who have returned from areas under a travel health advisory for COVID-19 (other than Hubei Province, Iran, or Italy) should:

  • Monitor themselves for symptoms of the 2019 novel coronavirus for 14 days after leaving the affected area
  • Contact CK Public Health’s COVID-19 intake line at 519.355.1071 x 1900 or call their primary care provider’s office if they experience symptoms

It is important that all travellers returning home call ahead prior to visiting any health care provider and let them know about travel history and symptoms (e.g., fever, cough, difficulty breathing) so that  special arrangements can be made to be seen quickly, provide testing, and ensure that  proper infection control measures are taken.

Please note that the research and data on COVID-19 continues to grow and evolve. We will continue to adapt our advice for travellers based on the latest science available.

Here are some great tips and advice from CKPH for attending and planning events.

Events and Gatherings

Attending
To prevent the spread of infection, residents should consider:

  • Avoiding large crowds
  • Avoiding close contact with sick people

Planning

When planning for a meeting, gathering or event, please use the risk assessment planning tool

Additionally, you can reduce the risk of spreading infection by:

  • Notifying attendees, either in advance or upon entry of the meeting that they should not stay if they are feeling ill or showing symptoms of illness
  • Having appropriate amounts of hand-hygiene supplies available for attendants (this could include ehand washing stations, and/or hand sanitizer with at least 70% alcohol)
  • Ensuring that all tables and meeting spaces are equipped with tissues as well as garbage cans are available throughout the venue
  • Using larger meeting spaces to allow attendees to increase their social distance from one another by at least one metre
  • Abiding by Food Safety Guidelines, including:
    • Do not provide attendees with buffet-style service
    • When possible, utilize pre-packaged or individual serving food items
