Now that we know what a cloud is, this week we will follow up on iCloud storage based on one of our wonderful members/readers questions.
The more we use our devices the more data we tend to save on our devices and/or on our Cloud Service. Due to this Cloud Services have become quite profitable for many companies especially when we do not clean out our storage area of unwanted photos, documents etc. Apple offers Icloud services with 5G free data storage per our Apple ID. Multiple devices sharing the same cloud can be a blessing and a curse. Your devices will have access to all the same information and sync up nicely however each device’s backup will be saved in the same cloud decreasing the amount of space available on the cloud. Thus Apple offers additional storage space for a monthly fee.
However many people do not have the financial means to purchase the additional space. This bring us to this week’s question.
How can I find out what is being stored in the “iCloud”?
There are several ways to find the details about your storage usage and what is stored on it as well as remove items. ***All info was sourced from Apple Support.
- By signing into the iCloud.com On a supported browser;
- Opening the Settings App On An iPhone, iPad, Or iPod Touch;
- The iCloud Windows App For/On A Windows PC.
- Through the System Preferences On A Mac;
WARNING: While you can also remove stored items to make more space available. Be careful because if you delete data stored in iCloud, it’s deleted from all your devices. You may want to make a copy of the information before you delete it.

Check your storage signing into the iCloud.com
- Sign in on iCloud.com and click on Account Settings, (image 1)
- then look at the Storage section. (image 2)
- For information about a segment of the bar graph, hold the pointer over the segment until its name and numeric storage size appear above the graph.

Check your storage on your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch
- On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch, tap Settings (the icon that looks like a cog)
- Then Tap on your name/avatar (underneath it says Apple Id, iCloud). (Image 3)
- A bar graph shows your overall storage usage. (Image 4)

- Below the graph, you see a list of apps and features and how much iCloud storage they use. The apps and features that use the most storage are at the top of the list. You can tap an app or feature for more information.(IMAGE 5)

Check your storage using windows iCloud app
- On your Windows computer, open the iCloud for Windows app.

Check your iCloud storage on your Mac
- On your Mac, choose Apple menu, System Preferences, then do one of the following:
- macOS 10.15 or later: Click Apple ID, then click iCloud.
- macOS 10.14 or earlier: Click iCloud. (Image 8)

Clouds are an awesome way to store files, photos, etc. but like any physical garage, basement, closet or storage locker they always needs a spring cleaning. It is good practice keep your cloud organized and rid yourself from those those unwanted, unneeded or duplicate files. It will help save space as well as money.
