Story:

Walking into little Tommy’s room, Jeff noticed his son’s books scattered across the floor. He bent down and picked up a small brown book titled “Hansel and Gretel”.

Oh how the book brought back memories for him of the years long ago.  His grandmother mailed the book to him while she traveling through Turkey and Germany. She always traveled from December 25th to January 6th  to somewhere exotic.  She considered it a spiritual quest since she traveled the span between the birth of Christ and the coming of the Magi, the three wise men.

Jeff was about Tommy’s age when he received his cherished possession.  He recalled his grandmother told him that Saint Nick requested that she send the book to him.  He opened the cover and read the inscription,

To Little Jeffery: You have been a very good boy. When I returned back to the North Pole, the elves found your last present wedged between the seat and the wall of the sleigh.  Since I will not be leaving the North Pole for another 364 day, I asked your Grandmother to send this to you.  Keep being good and I will be by your place next Christmas Eve. Love Kris Kringle.

He never realized it back then that the inscription was in his Grandmother’s handwriting yet she always told him it was really from Saint Nick.   His heart  warms every time he see this little treasure from his past.  He placed it on the book shelf with the rest of the books and tucked Tommy in; giving him a kiss on the forehead.

Heading downstairs and into the living room he noticed that the plate of cookies left out by Tommy had been eaten and the bottle of Coca Cola was almost gone.  “Who could have done this?” he thought to himself,

Suddenly he heard a raucous outside, looking out the window he saw on the lawn, sleigh marks and tiny hoof prints in the snow between the angel and the star of his light display.

He became more puzzled as to who could have done this. His wife was at work in the hospital and was not going to be back till early in the morning.

Just as he stepped out on the stoop he heard above him. “Merry Christmas Jeffery” He looked up and caught a glimpse of a Big Red sleigh racing off up into the stars. “I must be seeing things” he thought to himself.

He headed back in and noticed a strange present under the tree. Taking a closer inspection he realized it was addressed to him.  Ripping off the wrapping paper, he found a book titled “The Lost Christmas”  Opening the cover within was a inscription,

Dear Jeffery.  I promised your Grandmother that on the Christmas that you have a son the same age as the day I ask her to send you the book Hansel and Gretel, I would send you this book. It a one of a kind no other publications exists. Your Grandmother loved you dearly and she was a dear friend of mine. She would travel up to the North Pole every Christmas day and spend 12 days with us celebrating the beauty of the human spirit, the love and joy that was shared around the world during this time. Merry Christmas Jeffery, may you and Tommy enjoy reading this together for years to come. Love Kris Kringle.

When he looked at the author’s name, he realized it was his Grandmother. A tear of joy ran down his cheek as he placed the book back under the tree. He thought to himself “Who would have thought that his grandmother knew Santa or that Santa really existed? No one will believe this except one, Tommy.”

“Merry Christmas Grandma” he quietly whispered “Thank you so much.”
