Story

Joni had just finished feeding the cattle when she noticed a young bluebird on the bird feeder with some sparrows. The sun was crowning the horizon creating a picture perfect tapestry of colours as the dark sky lightened with hints of purple, and pink on a light blue back drop.  She admired the beauty before her and watched the birds flutter back and forth to the feeder.  She wondered “Do they know it’s Christmas?”  Their fluttering seem to have a rhythm to it. One would leave another would return almost like they doing a dance

“Oh I see you are doing the Christmas Waltz.” she quietly spoke to her feathery visitors. With all the joy she was feeling she knew it was going to be a Happy Christmas.

She was oblivious to the cold as she continued to watch the morning’s wonders unfold before her. The snow covered trees sparkle from the rising sun; suddenly she realized her teeth were chattering.  “I better head in”

She was heading to the house when somebody in a fancy black Cadillac pulled in to the laneway.

She hollered, “Mom that Cadillac is back” Twice before this vehicle would drive up the laneway half way then turn around.  Joni wondered what they wanted and on Christmas day, why would they show up.

Yet this time was different, the vehicle pulled right up to the house. It sat motionless for a few minutes.  Due to the dark tinted windows it was hard to make out whom or how many were in it. The driver door opened up and children choir could be heard singing “Joy to the World” as a young man stepped out.

“Mom, Mom!!! There is somebody here”

The young man wearing a dark blue button down jacket walked down the walkway to the porch precisely at the same time Joni’s mom stepped out the door.

“May I help you sir?” she asked him as she zipped up her coat.

“Hello Mrs. Adams.  I am here to help you. My name is Joseph Walker”

With a puzzled look, both Joni and her mother watch him climb the stairs with his hand extended.

“Several months ago you helped an older gentleman out. I hope you remember him.” He continues after shaking their hands.   “He was down and out, lost in the wood nearby”

“Yes I remember him, oh how we felt sorry for him. The police were busy so we fed and clothed him and let him spend the night. Remember him Joni”

Joni nodded

“Well Mrs Adam.”

“Please call me Doris.” She interrupted him.

“Doris, this man was in an accident and had amnesia.  He has fully regained his memories and he appreciates your kindness. He wants to repay you and your daughter.”

Joni and Doris stood there in shock.

He continues, “Doris and Joni, Mr. Frost would like to give you this.”  He reaches into his coat pocket and pulled out a white business envelope and hand it to Doris

She opened it up pulled out a couple of pieces of paper, suddenly the back door of the Cadillac opened up and the man they helped step out.

Doris’ eyes fill with tears as she watches the man walked up the stairs.  “Hello Doris, Thank you so much for helping me out.”

Doris hands the papers to Joni and give the Mr. Frost a hug. “John, you didn’t need to do this”

Joni looks down at the papers in her hands. It was the deed to the farm, paid off in full and in their name.

Joni looks up runs to Mr. Frost and gives him a big hug.

He looks down at her and smiles then holding Doris hand. “Your generosity and kindness deserves to be rewarded and what better than on Christmas day.” Realizing he was standing underneath the mistletoe Joni reached up and gave him a kiss on his cheek.

Suddenly, all the birds started to sing like a choir.

“Do you hear what I hear?” Joseph asked and then answered, “Nature rejoicing on a day of goodness and love.”
