Story

Down the long and winding road Uncle Albert, known by many as Admiral Halsey, drove to the levee looking for us.  He knew all the teens would be partying there because the levee was dry and made for a unique adventurous landscape for us young ones fondly called “The Grand Funk”.  The full moon lit his way around the curves and bends.  

I noticed his truck just up the gravel road, it was quite unique with it Hot Chocolate colour brown and white roof that looked like a giant marshmallow.  I quickly dumped my Piña Colada cooler.  If he had seen me with it I would be grounded for life.   I tried to hide behind the large willow tree along the bank; he parked his truck and jumped out.

“Sharona, Has anyone seen my Sharona.” He hollered towards the group of about 30.

One of the boys pointed in my direction. Everyone knew not to mess with my uncle. They knew he would call the police and have the party shut down if they tried to hide me.

Very slowly and carefully, I moved closer to the other side of the trunk. “Maybe he will not see me” I though. Unfortunately, thanks to the full moon, he spotted my arm as I grabbed on the trunk of the tree.

“Sharona, it time you get home. You still have to paint your wagon for this weekend’s parade.”  He spoke sternly yet with much love in his eyes.

I came out from behind the willow and headed for the truck.  My uncle gave me a quick smile. “You know your mother is worried about you!”

I guiltily lowered my head and nodded.

“So what is the theme of this year’s Parade?” His eyes still filled with love as he changed the subject.

“It supposes to be the Songs in the Keys of Life, but I have no idea of what to do with my wagon.” I answered in a whisper.

“Let your imagination run, what do you think of when you hear that phrase?”

“I don’t know.” 

“Well I think of birds, frogs and even children laughing as well as babies crying while their mother sings them a lullaby.  Don’t worry about what you think people expect to see and let your heart lead you to what it means to you” He excitingly explained.

It was a quiet ride back home from that moment on as I sat and listen to the wind rustle in the trees we passed by and the crickets serenading the full moon.   Like a light being turned on I knew what I was going to paint; Large sunflowers with bees humming around it and birds singing.

“Uncle Albert, do you still have that old megaphone and tape recorder. I like to add sounds of nature to my wagon after I paint it for the parade.” My heart was filled with excitement at the thought of doing something like this.

“Yes sweetie I do and I will help capture whatever sound you like to have”

We pulled up to the house and I gave my uncle a big hug. “Thank you so much, see you tomorrow” I said as I jumped out of the truck.

“See you tomorrow sweetie and give the best of my love to you mom.  Good Night”

I skipped up the steps in anticipation of what I could create almost forgetting that I still had to face the wrath of my mother.
