Story

A young lion name Zambia was mesmerized by the field of flowers that lay just beyond his enclosure at the Kansas Zoo. He wondered what they were called.  He noticed a butterfly feasting on one that reminded him of a Sardonyx stone. He called out to her.

“Excuse me, Miss Excuse me.”

“Yes what would you like?” she asked while lofting over on a gentle breeze. He waited for her to arrive when he noticed the pearl like colour under her wing. “Oh she is so beautiful” he thought.

“What can I do for you?” she asked heading towards the tender part of his nose. He felt a tickle as she landed.

“Noticing that beautiful field of flowers, I was wondering what are they?”  His eyes crossed as he tried to focus on her.

“Well, those purple ones are gladiolus and those red looking ones are poppies and the whites ones by the peridot colour stone are daisies.  The ones in the way back are sunflowers, they are actually my favourite.  I should let you know that is not a field but a large garden called The Augustus Caesar Garden”

The little lion was impressed with the butterfly’s knowledge. When he remembered that he did not know her name. “I am sorry, I did not get your name, mine is Zambia.”

“Nice to meet you I am called February. The call me that because I did not come out of my chrysalis in the butterfly conservatory until February all the rest of my kind came out in November. Oh look me just chattering on while your eyes look like they are going to get stuck that way.”

She took flight and landed on a rock nearby just as Leo and Virgo came pouncing out of the den.  Known as the twins, they were the sixth and seventh cubs born that year.  “Hi Leo and Virgo come meet February she has such interesting stories”

“Has she won a Pulitzer if not we are not interested we are off to watch youtube videos over Tony’s shoulder.” they replied in unison.

Tony was their caretaker.  While taking his breaks, he would watch youtube videos under a large tree by North end of Lion enclosure and feed the birds loaves of bread.

The two bounced off while February and Zambia continued to discuss the beauty of the gardens just over the Southside of the enclosure.
