Story:

As Venus aligned with Mercury, Lupercialia felt that something weird was about to happen.  She was hopping over to the nearest meadow to watch the bees and butterflies dance around the flowers. It sometimes looked like they were in attending a Speed Dating event, the way they would jump from one flower to another seeking the sweet pollen and nectar from the centre of each one. The trumpet flowers hug the bees that visited them.

On a beautiful autumn day it would look like 1 billion buzzing around the meadow. She always kept to herself as she watched the activity, mesmerized by the movements, reminding her of an intricate ballet.

When she finally arrived, she noticed the meadow was not buzzing like it usually did. There was a red van in the distance and men dressed in white with netting on over their faces.  She was curious of who they were and hopped closer to check them out.  Being a frog, she was able to hide in the tall grass and observed what was happening. She realized the bees were very sluggish and not moving like they usually do around the white boxes they called home. She hopped a little closer and become aware of one of the bees hiding on a long blade of grass.

What is happening? She asked with concern.

“They are the beekeepers; they come and take our honey.  They smoked the hive before I got back.”  He replied as he watched them.

She sat and watched with him. The beekeepers finished up and then one said to the other. “Come on Frank, Mary has toasted tomato sandwiches waiting for us at the house.”

Lupercalia was worried about the bees, she never saw them so dormant before.  Suddenly just as she was about to hop over and check them out, the hive started buzzing with activity as they flew towards the meadow.

The little bee waiting with her was getting ready to fly off. “Thanks for keeping me company, the Queen is calling out to us, time to fill the hive again.”

As he flew away she turned around and watched as the meadow’s mesmerizing dance of the bees and butterflies returned.
