Story

In a land called Remulak, a young prince named Melmac was heading to his grandparent’s cottage. He loved visiting them and their garden filled with beautiful colours. The natural purple, red, yellow and green tapestry filled his heart with joy and peace. As he watched the birds, butterflies and animals frolic and forage in the garden he would make up stories about their adventures.

As he ventured over the hill and through the meadow Prince Malmac noticed a pile of bones in the middle of the path.  Cautiously and curiously he proceeded to inspect the pile. “These were not here yesterday when I passed through.” he thought to himself.

They appeared to be old and dried up almost like they were dug up from a grave in the cemetery.  He remembered his grandmother telling him stories of grave robbers. Yet he thought they had all but disappeared after the new sheriff had brought law & order to the land.

He quickly hurried on his way to inform his grandparent about what he had found so they could contact the sheriff.  Suddenly a shadowy figure jumped out from behind an old oak tree.

“Hello there lad, where are you off to in such a hurry?” A man with a scar across his face ominously asked.

Malmac was almost frozen in place, if only he could get over that last hill where he’d be safe at his grandparents.

In a soft voice he replied, “Oh I am just heading over the hill, my family is waiting for me. And I am quite late. I am sure they are on their way now looking for me.” Trying to avoid any sinister plans this intimidating man could have, Melmac told a white lie about being late.

“Well I just want to know if you would be interested in buying some trinkets I have?” The man inquired almost oblivious to what Malmac had just told him.  He opened his hand to reveal a small bracelet and a few pieces of costume jewelry.

“Girls have dreams about these treasures. I am sure you must have a fair lass you like to impress.  All I ask is for that scarlet ring you are wearing. It cannot be worth as much as what I am offering you.”

Malmac looked at his ring; it was a gift from his grandfather, a family heirloom so he was told.

“Well lad, is it a deal or no deal?” The man harshly raised his voice.

“No Deal” Malmac screamed as he sidestepped the man and raced towards the hill.

He was quicker yet he could hear the man yelling “Get back here you willful lad, Get back here now!!  I want that ring and I am going to get it.”

Malmac’s heart was racing and beating so hard he could hear it in his ears.  He made it over the hill and up the lane to his Grandparent’s cottage.  To his relief, he noticed they were outside with the sheriff.

“Help, Help there is a strange man chasing me” He hollered as he ran straight into his grandmother’s arms.

The sheriff got on his horse and head down the path over the hill.

Malmac’s grandmother comforted him as he told them what had happen.  His grandfather face turned beet red with frustration and anger and said, “It okay, the sheriff will find him. We know who he is and he cannot hide much longer.”

His grandmother led him to the garden and when Melmac saw the beauty before him all the fear, anxiety and dread left him.  The butterflies flew about his head and the birds serenaded him with their sweet melody. It was almost as if they knew he needed them more than ever.
