Story

The stars filled the night and Mars could be seen by the naked eye in the southern part of the sky.  Marty a snowshoe hare was out admiring and forging through the new spring growth sprouting the melting snow.  This time of year was enjoyable because he could get a taste of the first sprouts of the spring vegetation while the snakes were still hibernating deep within the earth.  He tend to stay away from the daffodil patches since they left a bitter taste in his mouth but the green moss was a tasty treat after a long winter.

As he wandered through a pasture he came to a farm.  He was intrigued with what he saw, the buildings were so big. Hopping over to what looked like a small house made from bloodstone with aquamarine trim; he came across a round looking rock.

“Hmm what is this?” He nudged it with his nose. It rolled forward and then rolled back almost hitting him. Startled he jumped back.

Gradually a small curly haired animal exited the bloodstone house.   “Oh do not worry that will not hurt you, it just the farmer’s  15 year old daughter’s basketball.”

“Basketball, what is that?” Marty gave the animal a puzzling look. “And who or what are you?” Marty had not seen anything like this creature.

“Oh sorry, I am Lenny and I am a lamb.  My mom is over there”, Lenny looked over his shoulder. “She is called a sheep; basketball is a game that Suzy plays with that ball. She loves it. Not sure of the rules but I know she throws it into that round hole on the pole behind you.  You are a rabbit right?”

Marty’s mind started to swirl as Lenny kept on talking. Sheep, lamb, basketball, farmer and Suzy there was no relativity to what he had experienced before.

When Lenny called him a rabbit that brought him back to reality. “Rabbit, No I am not a Rabbit! I am Hare. We are nothing alike.  That is like calling a lion, a pussy cat.” He snapped back at Lenny.

“Oh I am sorry, I never seen a Hare before” Lenny apologized as he step back a few feet.

Marty saw the hurt in Lenny’s eyes and realized his response was beyond rational, “No I am sorry, I should not have snapped at you. Just as this environment is all new to me, I should have realized that you may not have seen one of my kinds before.” He hopped over to Lenny and nuzzled his front legs.

Lenny bent down and put his head near Marty. “It’s okay. You know it’s getting late, and you should not be out in the wild at night, especially around here.  The Coyotes are very aggressive at this time of year.  Please come spend the night with us. Mom won’t mind.  Rest up and then get a good start on your travels again in the morning.”

Marty took Lenny up on his offer to spend the night, however that night Marty and Lenny learned more about each other and became good friend. So much so that Marty never left the farm and spent every night with Lenny and his mom.
